Thermal Camera Resolution and Sensitivity Explained

On By InstruNexa Editorial Team / 0 comments

Direct answer: Infrared resolution tells you how many thermal measurement pixels form the image. Thermal sensitivity, commonly stated as NETD in mK, describes how small a temperature difference the detector can distinguish under specified conditions. They answer different questions.

Do not compare one number in isolation

Specification Answers Use it for
IR resolution How many thermal pixels? Spatial detail and target coverage
Field of view How wide is the scene? Working distance and framing
IFOV What angle does one detector pixel represent? Estimating spatial detail at distance
NETD / sensitivity How small a temperature contrast can be distinguished? Subtle patterns and low-contrast scenes
Accuracy How close is the reported temperature under stated conditions? Quantitative measurement

A practical example

A high-resolution camera can place more pixels across a small component. A sensitive camera can separate slight thermal differences across a surface. But an out-of-focus image, distant target or poor emissivity setup can still undermine results. Fluke specifications show resolution, IFOV, sensitivity and emissivity correction as separate performance fields for this reason.

Selection workflow

  1. Define the smallest target and farthest working distance.
  2. Select sufficient thermal pixels across that target.
  3. Compare sensitivity if subtle temperature patterns matter.
  4. Verify focus, temperature range and radiometric controls.
  5. Confirm export and reporting features for documentation.

Limitations and safety

Resolution and sensitivity do not guarantee correct diagnosis. Surface emissivity, reflections, atmosphere, focus and operator method affect interpretation. Treat thermal findings as evidence to investigate, not as automatic proof.

FAQ

Is a lower NETD better?

Generally, a lower stated NETD indicates the ability to distinguish smaller temperature differences, but compare conditions and the complete system.

Does visible-image resolution count?

It helps documentation and overlays but is not a substitute for infrared detector resolution.
