How to Choose a Thermal Camera

On By InstruNexa Editorial Team / 0 comments

Short answer: Choose a thermal camera around the smallest target you must resolve, the distance you will stand from it, the temperature range, and whether you need radiometric measurements or only a thermal pattern. Resolution alone is not enough.

The six specifications to compare

Specification Why it matters Selection question
Infrared resolution Number of thermal measurement pixels How small is the target at working distance?
Field of view / IFOV Area seen and spatial detail per pixel Wide room scan or small distant component?
Thermal sensitivity (NETD) Ability to show small temperature differences Do subtle patterns matter?
Temperature range Upper and lower measurable limits What is the credible operating range?
Focus Sharpness of the thermal image Fixed, manual or automatic for your workflow?
Radiometric controls Supports temperature analysis Can you set emissivity and reflected conditions?

Pattern finding versus measurement

A thermal image is excellent for comparing patterns and finding anomalies, but accurate temperature measurement requires correct setup. FLIR explains that polished metals have low emissivity and can reflect surrounding thermal radiation, making them difficult to measure reliably. Use a known reference or qualified procedure when the number matters.

Choose the form factor

A phone-connected camera is compact and uses the phone for display and sharing. A handheld camera may offer better controls, ruggedness and a self-contained workflow. Limitations and safety

Thermal cameras do not see through walls. They show surface infrared patterns that may suggest moisture, missing insulation, heat transfer or electrical loading; confirmation requires an appropriate follow-up test. Keep required clearances from live electrical equipment and follow site PPE and qualified-person rules.

FAQ

Is a higher temperature range always better?

No. Choose the range relevant to the job; other specifications may be more important for building and electronics work.

Can shiny metal show a false temperature?

Yes. Reflections and low emissivity can dominate the reading.
