How to Choose an Inspection Camera or Borescope
Short answer: Start with the opening you must pass through and the route you must navigate. Then choose probe diameter, cable length and stiffness, articulation, lens layout, focus range, lighting, screen and recording features in that order.

Choose from the inspection path backward
An inspection camera is useful only if its probe can reach the target without being forced. Measure the narrowest opening, note every bend, estimate the insertion distance, and decide whether you need to look forward, sideways, or both. A smaller probe improves access, while a larger probe may provide a more robust housing or different optics. Evident lists 4 mm and 6 mm as common general-purpose industrial diameters, but the right choice is determined by your access path.
| Question | What it changes | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Is the path straight? | Cable behavior | Semi-rigid probes are easy to push and shape |
| Are there branches or tight bends? | Tip control | Choose two-way or four-way articulation |
| Is the opening very small? | Probe diameter | Leave clearance; do not match the opening exactly |
| Must you inspect sidewalls? | Lens direction | Dual- or triple-lens layouts reduce probe repositioning |
| Must findings be documented? | Display and storage | Choose a screen model with photo/video recording |
Features that matter
- Probe diameter: measured at the camera head, including any protective cap.
- Usable length: longer is not automatically better; extra cable can be harder to guide.
- Focus range: match the expected camera-to-target distance.
- Articulation: helpful for steering and aiming, but the bending section must never be forced.
- Environmental limits: verify water resistance, temperature and chemical compatibility for the exact model.
Best fit by task
For engines and machinery, start at Automotive Diagnostic Tools. For cavities and building work, see Home & Wall Inspection Tools. For drains, use the dedicated Plumbing & Drain Inspection Tools pathway. Browse all Inspection Cameras & Borescopes after defining the path.
Limitations and safety
A camera can reveal visible conditions; it does not certify structural integrity, electrical safety, pressure integrity or code compliance. De-energize and cool equipment where required. Never insert a consumer probe into live electrical equipment, moving machinery, pressurized systems or environments outside its rating. Consult a qualified technician when the inspection affects safety.
FAQ
Do I need articulation?
Choose it when you must steer around bends or aim at a sidewall. A semi-rigid probe is often sufficient for a known, mostly straight route.
Is 1080p always better?
No. Lens quality, focus distance, lighting, compression and display quality can matter as much as the pixel label.
