What Borescope Camera Diameter Do You Need?

On By InstruNexa Editorial Team / 0 comments

Short answer: Choose a camera head smaller than the narrowest verified opening and allow clearance for bends, debris, protective caps and imperfect measurements. The smallest probe is not always the best image or durability choice.

Measure the entire access route

Measure the entry port, restrictions beyond it, elbow geometry and any weld bead or internal obstruction. A nominal pipe size is not the same as usable internal clearance. Evident notes that reduced internal diameter at welded joints can stop a larger videoscope even when the main pipe appears wide enough.

Diameter range Typical reason to choose it Tradeoff to check
About 2–4 mm Very small cavities and narrow ports Durability, light output, price and available length
About 5–6 mm General mechanical and equipment inspection Confirm clearance through every bend
Above 6 mm Larger passages, long-reach or specialized systems May not pass restrictions or tight elbows

These are selection ranges, not guarantees. Always use the exact camera-head diameter from the product specification.

Three checks before buying

  1. Include accessories: a mirror, magnet, hook or protective ring can increase the effective diameter.
  2. Allow bending clearance: the probe may fit a straight gauge but fail at an elbow.
  3. Protect the lens: do not choose such a tight fit that the camera head scrapes along rough metal.

Best fit

Use smaller diameters where access is the hard constraint. Prefer a more robust general-purpose size when the route allows it and repeated use matters. Compare current options in Inspection Cameras & Borescopes, then use Find the Right Tool and the Tool Glossary to confirm terms.

Limitations and safety

Do not force a probe. A stuck or damaged probe can harm both the tool and the inspected equipment. Isolate moving, hot, pressurized and energized systems according to the equipment procedure.

FAQ

Should the probe equal the hole diameter?

No. Manufacturing tolerances, debris, coatings and curvature require clearance.

Does a thinner probe always mean lower quality?

No, but miniaturization changes cost, lighting, optics and durability. Compare complete specifications.
